This is Ruby and I'm as lay as the layperson stumbling over the contents of this post. But great article on Rubinius.

Hopefully, Morph can also bring back something to the Ruby and/or Rails community starting with the initial services we offer.

Best.

The benchmark look very good. Could you put a long the YARV benchmark?
The rubinius bm_vm2_regexp.rb benchmark is much slower compare to MRI. Is this the benchmark for regular expression? Rails use a lot of regular expression, if the regular expression is slow, it would greatly slow down the Rails application. I hope they will improve it after they complete the full feature of Rubinius.

Nice work! Look forward to the rest of the series!

Jens--those benchmarks are measured in seconds for typical runs and it looks like that is the case here. You can find them in the Rubinius source--as well as Ruby trunk (1.9) whence they originally came from.

Oops! :-)
You're right, I completely forgot that "detail". These measurements are in seconds. So Rubinius is mostly faster than MRI.
It is still a young project however, so all you should read in these numbers is that Rubinius is very promising, not that you can start using it in a production setting ;-)

This is a nice overview, and I'm looking forward to reading more. However, may I quibble about the performance numbers you quote? You forgot to put in any units, so I can't even tell whether bigger numbers are better or worse. Is Rubinius half the speed of MRI, or twice?

I won't forget, I promise :-)
Hmmm, now the reverse is happening... Friends from MoR are stealing my punches in the post's comments ;-)
Should have gone with a 'shock and awe' approach: hit the publish button for a huge monolithic article just before the presentation :-)

The specs are one of the things I'll be talking about in one of the future articles. This is a great initiative indeed.

Nice article mat. And Rubinius is also working w/ JRuby to build a great set of specs which might end up being used by MRI too I've red somewhere.
